Flashback on a key step in power monitoring History
In 1992, a young engineer responsible for launching electronic development within the switchgear business decided to focus his research on electrical multi-measurement. The vision of this engineer ? Michel Krumenacker, actual Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Socomec ? resulted in the generation of know-how that not only perfectly complemented traditional switching devices but also opened up a completely novel market at that time ? creating a revolutionary new industry benchmark in terms of power monitoring: Diris.
Evolving the revolution – to create a hub of technologies
Starting life as a concentration of unique and easy to use technologies ? and since the launch of the first Diris network measurement analyser in 1993 – Diris has evolved to provide a complete package for network measurement, monitoring and energy management.
Significant financial investment, combined with the breadth and depth of multi-disciplinary expertise from across the business, has resulted in the successful delivery of this transformational technology: the first and only system to deliver comprehensive power monitoring features whilst also reconciling energy efficiency, availability and safety for more informed decision making.
Building on the legacy – to master the digital infrastructure
Energy monitoring has never mattered more. With unprecedented volumes of online traffic and world-record beating levels of data throughput, the careful management and mastery of our digital infrastructure can provide organisations with critical visibility and reliability ? protecting against downtime that we simply cannot afford.
Over twenty-five years after having revolutionised the electrical multi-measurement market with the Diris meter, Socomec has again set the precedent in leading-edge power monitoring systems with the launch of the latest Diris Digiware models for AC and DC installations ? with the additional benefit of Residual Current Monitoring (RCM).
What is Residual Current Monitoring and why does it matter?
Leakage currents to earth are a natural phenomenon in any electrical installation. Typically, a very low current that flows from live parts of the installation to earth in the absence of an insulation fault, the leakage current can increase over time as the electrical installation ages. Unlike Residual Current Devices (RCD), RCMs help improve safety by warning the user of an increasing leakage current ? without disconnecting faulty circuits.
Improved safety, improved availability, improved quality of information
Thierry Jost, Offer & Application Marketing Director, Socomec explains; ?In the spirit of the original development work, we have explored how to combine technologies in order to deliver real versatility and intelligence in design. With the addition of RCM capability, the system is able to provide unprecedented safety ? protecting people and assets without interrupting the supply ? thanks to an alarm notification that provides early visibility of anomalies. This means that maintenance operations and clean shutdowns can be planned in advance, reducing costly downtime. With 24/7 availability, the system can also be used as a passive protection method to avoid nuisance tripping.??
?Ultimately, the system supports much better decision making. Weak spots can be identified within the electrical installation; with more accurate data, real clarity is brought to decision-making.? The justification of investments and repairs becomes straightforward as a result of being better informed.? Every evolution of the Diris technology honours the last ? and every iteration creates a new global benchmark.?
